Abandonment issues with cats are actually an issue with the humans who abandon them in the middle of nowhere.

Most adoption stories that begin with a cat found in an unlikely place still happen in a general area where cats are found. Mainly cities and populated areas of civilization. The domestic cat is actually not so much a domestic animal, but more of a near-civilization dweller. Well, technically speaking, they're a much more domestic animal than the raccoons or opossums that literally hang out on the edges of society, just out of reach. But cats? There are plenty of strays everywhere there are humans. Sure, it's more prevalent in some countries (Greece is full of cats), but it's a general truth of every big city with a comfortable enough climate.

So imagine the surprise on u/acocktailofmagnets's face when a cat wandered through her door - because the nearest neighbor lives 20 minutes' drive away from her. She lives in the literal definition of "the middle of nowhere", and suddenly - a cat? That makes no sense. But still, she's a very expawrienced pet mom, and would never let a cat go abandoned under her care. Her intentions to adopt this cat for good are very clear. And yet, the surprise is still… well, surprising. How did a cat so friendly and domestic-acting end up in a place like this?

That's when the sad realization kicked in, both for her and for the people in the comments - he was almost certainly abandoned there. It's so sad to think about the fact that people who adopted a cat, took the responsibility, can simply drive to a rural area and just leave their cats behind. It's incomprehensible to us. It's plain evil, period. People who abandon a cat should be persecuted by the law. This is sheer abandonment of a family member - so what if they're feline?
